Blue Mountain Pinot Noir Program Overview

Over the last 10 years we have made changes in our viticulture and cellar management practices striving to produce high quality wines that reflect the site in which the grapes are grown.  2019 marks 48 years of farming on our estate and 28 years of making wine.  We are excited to share with you the future of the Pinot Noir being made at Blue Mountain.

Blue Mountain’s philosophy is to focus on the potential of each variety, continually improving its range across Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gamay Noir, and MéthodeTraditionnelle sparkling wine.

Blue Mountain’s strong focus on viticulture across the site allows for an increased representation of individual terroir when the grapes reach the winery.

A deliberate refinement of the winemaking process has allowed Blue Mountain to more clearly capture the identity of each of the vineyard blocks. Through these unifying processes, Blue Mountain allows for a reflection of the land and the fruits of its labour.

For Blue Mountain, as the vineyards age, and new vineyards are established, the cycle of growth as a business and a range continues. The process is truly an ever-evolving reality, representative of the Estate, and bringing precision and focus to its continued evolution.

Wild Terrain - Block 9 Pinot Noir

Wild Terrain Pinot Noir, also known as the untamed sibling, represents the most extreme and varied topography of the Pinot Noir blocks from steep slopes exposed to the wind, to sun-drenched, flatter plains over loamy sand. Significant South-Western exposure reveals a wild complexity, at once handsome and delicately pretty, savoury and boldly free.

Gravel Force - Block 14 Pinot Noir

A more Westerly and Southern exposure creates a warm site for the 30 year old vines, the basis for Gravel Force– an overt, brooding and textural wine with greater structure, and strength.. Combining a base of rocky gravel, loamy sand and more clay than other Blue Mountain Pinot Noir vineyards, Block 14 encourages strong natural growth and vigour.

River Flow - Block 23 Pinot Noir

Planted in 1994, Block 23 rises majestically from the earth upon high ground from sandy loam soil. The vineyard’s almost Northern exposure, combined with gentle, East-facing slopes expose the vines to cool morning sun, allowing the vines to develop gently and undisturbed, between sun and soil crafting Blue Mountain’s River Flow. This is Pinot as nature intended - a refined, elegant and composed Pinot Noir.

Early July, my family and I travelled to Torroja del Priorat in the province of Tarragona, located in the heart of the Priorat wine region of Spain.  We were blown away with the beauty of this area as well as the challenging growing conditions of the vineyard sites.  The vineyards are mainly located on terraced hillsides trained in a gobelet (bush vines), while some of the newer vineyards are trellised.  The vineyard sites can be found planted between 100 - 700 metres above sea level.

The main red varietals grown in this area are Grenacha (Grenache) and Carineña (Carginan) along with some Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot.  The soil is quite unique, with reddish and black slate and quartz.

i4C

This past July I attended and represented the winery at the International Cool Climate Chardonnay Celebration held in Niagara.  This event celebrates wine, food and learning about this cool variety.  There are a number of events that occur throughout the weekend.

The i4C commenced with The School of Cool panel tastings.  The Reserve Chardonnay 2015 was included in Session 3, Raising Chardonnay.

13th Street Winery hosted a lunch, Fizz, Friends and Fromage on the Saturday.

The Blanc de Blancs 2009 R.D. was showcased at the Flights of Chardonnay tasting.

The Cool Chardonnay World Tour Tasting and Dinner was hosted on the last night of the i4C.

Hidden Bench Winery hosted Bubbles on the Bench as a closure to the weekend festivities.

A preview of the Blanc de Blancs 2010 R.D was poured at this event.  Look for the release of this wine in October.

Vagabond Kitchen @ Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars July 22nd

In the last few years our home in the Southern Okanagan has seen an explosion in fantastic little gourmet food vendors.  This summer we thought it would be fun to jump on the food wagon and have our friends from Vagabond Kitchen stop by on a few days throughout July and August.

They will be serving items from their simple but delicious menu, all easily eaten with hands, fingers, elbows or whichever body part you are most comfortable using.  Enjoy some lunch, wine, outdoor games and of course our famous view.  No reservations required, bring along your friends, while the first date is July 22nd.  See our Events Page for further dates and details.

Cheers!

Composting at Blue Mountain

One of the key pieces to sustainability in the vineyard is our use of composting. Typically a large amount of compost material arrives in the spring, where it is windrowed and left to decompose over 1-2 years before it is spread throughout the vineyard. We are always looking for ways to improve our farming practice and connection with this land. Happy Earth Day, and please enjoy this video of Ian explaining our wonderful compost heap.
